One thing that we are big supporters of here at the Great Geek Refuge are independent creators. You’ll find that all of our writers and podcasters are independent creators themselves. That being said, when we come across another fellow creator trying to make a name for themselves, we like to give them a chance to shine!

That brings us to Free Fall Comics’ first project: Roundhouse Hooligans. Writer L.A. Keim has been working on the book for nearly a decade. That may seem like a long time but as any artist can tell you, as their skills improve and new ideas pop up, they’ll often revisit projects. With a new art team of co-writer Brian Kerr, artists Ricardo Faccini, Livia Pastore, colorist Kirsty Swan and letterer Darren Close, Roundhouse Hooligans is moving forward! The reworked first issue is now complete and can be downloaded through their website if you subscribe (it’s 100% free). On the site they describe the comic as:

A gritty drama, jam-packed with action, romance, twisted humour, and unique characters. This is, the Roundhouse Hooligans! A group of orphaned misfits with foul mouths and hearts of gold.

The story is mature in nature, with coarse language, nudity and violence interwoven into the well-drawn panels. The plot is interesting enough that when you’re finished with the first issue, you want to to keep reading.

We start in the past, at a family Thanksgiving dinner that is interrupted by a gang of motorcycle thugs. What did the dad do? What was he involved with that has these guys showing up at his doorstep????

As we jump to the present, the story becomes one of a team of misfits on a mission to find a missing sister. They venture to a house where they believe she was being held and get more than they bargained for upon arrival. There is definitely a mystery to unravel, one that keeps you invested in what’s to come next.

For those who like their comics action-packed and bloody, Roundhouse Hooligans doesn’t disappoint. Same with coarse language, nudity and sex. None of that is shied away from, in fact it is on full display in this premiere issue, so take that information how you will. If that sort of thing is your jam, then the carrots dangled by the narrative will keep you wanting more, and wanting an answer to what happened and why.
