Comics and Books

Whether it's our discussion of a recent convention, a hot new book, or a movie based on a comic, it'll be right here in our "Comics" section.

Mike on the Mic w/ Troy and Marc Tie In: Best Scores/Soundtracks

We're going to try something new here at GGR. Instead of just having a podcast or an article and saying "well, if you want to know about that content you're going to have to listen/read," we're going to give you both options.  Not everyone likes to read, not everyone likes to listen to podcasts. We got you covered no matter your preference.

Listen, read, or listen and read! Take what you want without the fear of sub-standard cleanliness that most Chinese buffets present!

While at the Bungalow Ale House in Woodbridge last night, Troy, Marc and I discussed the best musical accompaniments to movies. Troy helped establish the distinction that there are soundtracks and there are scores and we gave our favorites of both.

On a side note, I'm listening to the bagpipe version of Last of the Mohicans at work (because I'm on a movie score kick right now) and a buddy of mine is like "what's with the bagpipes, did a cop die?" I just about fell out of my chair. Thanks Fonse.

Cops and Captain Spock get bagpipes at their funerals. No one else.

We came up with a pretty great list of movie scores and soundtracks.

  • John Williams got a special shout out for his entire body of work. Ones that we mentioned in particular were Superman, The Imperial March from The Empire Strikes Back, which Troy mentioned was of particular note because it was new music for a new character essentially. Darth Vader IS the Imperial March where as Superman had existed for decades before John Williams' score to the Richard Donner classic. Indiana Jones, also a new character when Raiders of the Lost Ark came out. The Indiana Jones theme is identifiable with him.
  • George Clinton, yes, THAT George Clinton (of the mothership, make my funk the P-funk, I want to get funked up, etc) did the score to Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Mind. Blown.
  • Marc dropped some soundtracks on us (Mortal Kombat, Darkness Falls, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Gone in Sixty Seconds), each one awesome in it's own right.
  • We all agreed on the awesomeness of Marvel's Iron Man, Captain America, and Guardians of the Galaxy. Pulp Fiction, Flash Gordon/Highlander (any soundtrack by Queen) those all made our list, too
  • Conan the Barbarian & Robocop made the list from the impressive composer Basil Poledouris.

Seriously, great podcast. Check it out when you get a chance. Go to iTunes or any other podcast search engine and look up Mike on the Mic. Look up GGR Pirate Radio while you're at it, we got some great podcasts their, too!

Thanks for listening/reading guys. Stay tuned, we got more coming!
