David Bowie Tribute
Last night, the world lost an incredible individual, someone of unending grace and talent, a jack of all trades and many names. David Robert Jones better known as David Bowie, Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust, The Goblin King, and many more names “died peacefully surrounded by his family” after an 18 month battle with cancer as was reported by his social media accounts.
My first introduction to David Bowie, I couldn’t even tell you. I assume it happened when I was too young to remember. He and his music have always been there as a constant in my life good times and bad as I’m sure that many can relate to. My wife and I played Golden Years at our wedding. I’m sure many like myself at least one point in our life listened to Space Oddity after a break up. Labyrinth, Zoolander, The Prestige, Sponge Bob SquarePants, all roles that made this man a pop culture icon in-himself. His music has been used in over 450 movies and TV shows ensuring that at some point in everyone’s life David Bowie was there. Despite all of his acclaim as a musician, actor or fashion icon, Bowie was still humble. Just last year, he turned down an offer of Knighthood from the Queen of England because he “didn’t see why he deserved it.”
The reach of David Bowie’s legacy is even more evident in his death. Across social media, we see stars and people from all walks of life sharing how this man touched their lives. Eddie Izzard asked for radio stations around the world to play David Bowie’s music today because “We owe him that, at least.” Marilyn Manson wrote about his first introduction to David Bowie, The Dead Kennedys, Ozzy Osborne, Blink 182, LGBT rights groups and pages, and many more have all been outpouring their condolences and grief in the loss of this incredible man.
Little is known at this point as to what form of cancer he was suffering from or how his treatment had progressed, what we do know is that in the past 18 months while battling cancer he went on to preform shows around the world, produce and release two new albums. His final album Blackstar was this past Friday. Even before the news of his death, it was being hailed as one of his greatest works. To know that he went on to do all of this while battling such a brutal disease shows that even in his final fight he carried on with the same grace he exhibited in life.
January 10th, 2016 the world lost David Bowie, one of the most graceful rebels the world has ever seen. He is survived by his Wife Iman, his Son Duncan, and his Daughter Alexandria. I heard it said today “The world is 4.543 billion years old, and you existed at the same time as David Bowie if nothing else let that thought sink in.” David Bowie: thank you for all you did and have done, you will be truly missed good sir.
