Review of Star Wars: Battlefront
Alright! My first game reviews here on GGR and boy do we got a game that has so much potential and manages to FAIL on the simplest designs and functions! A next gen Star Wars: Battlefront has been a game that I had wanted to get my hands on for years, well before I even knew about this one. All those long nights playing side by side with my friends on Battlefront 2’s amazing galactic conquest or hero battles, I was hoping we'd get a spiritual continuation of those games. NOPE. Instead we get a shell of a game that basically just cashes in on the franchise name and slaps a beautiful EA APPROVES sticker on it. Which I will give credit where credit is due; EA is taking full responsibility for this game as their logo is everywhere on it.
Anyways, enough of my rant before I actually talk about the game. Let's talk about the good things first.
The game looks and sounds like a Star Wars games should. The blaster fire and vehicles are all great sounding as well as graphically looking phenomenal. Finally, a game that shows the full potential of the new gens capabilities. The game is fun at times. There are random occurrences that happen in any multiplayer game, plus playing as one of the six iconic heroes in the game is a blast (Luke, Leia or Han for the Rebels. Vader, Palpatine or Boba Fett for the Empire). However, you do have to be lucky enough to find those power ups in game.
After playing for few hours the appeal seems to just….fall apart like an R2 unit with a bad motivator. First of all, the game is a purely multiplayer experience, there is no campaign mode. There is a pale imitation of an offline mode against bots or a horde mode (which is in every game to date nowadays). Since it’s a purely multiplayer game like most of what DICE puts out, you would think that would allow for plenty of online options and customization. WRONG; instead you get a laughable customization option for either the empire or rebel character you play, and cannot even access the more diverse options till max level.
The game features 11 weapons, ELEVEN!! I'm fairly certain you had more weapons choices in Contra for NES! And all 11 of them are almost the same weapon. They vary in how fast they can fire but almost all the weapons can fire at sniper level range (apparently blasters don’t have a drop off for distance). This would almost be all forgivable considering the game comes with many many MANY maps right?! Again, nope. The main two modes of the game are Supremacy and Walker Assault, both of which share the same FOUR maps! What the frag is going on with AAA games nowadays??? Is the only goal to cash in on a brand name and call it a fragging day?
Now the game has 7 more modes that vary from standard death matches, capture the droid (flag), and a 2 hero modes which shake up the game Meta. However these modes only have 2/3 more maps which are also shared between them. So we are expected to pay the full retail $60 price for this online map pack that has less content than freaking battlefront 2, which came out about 10 years ago! The game just feels lazy and they did just the bare minimum to get by, hell even the heroes don’t match their locations!
I cannot in good consciences recommend this game in its current form, it is a pure cash grab in every way. To further prove my cash grab point: there is a $50 price tag for the season pass. So, what you're saying EA is I get to pay almost the price of a full game for what exactly????? No one knows yet, the item information mentions early access to additional content. Soooooo I am expected to pay all that money for the possible extra content of this train wreck??? Thanks EA, you are the greatest.
My overall rating for Star Wars Battlefront is a 4/10. This game is below average and I refuse to give it "style points" for looking pretty and having what amounts to a Star Wars paint job. I would rather pay this price for an uglier game with more content than this lip-stick covered pig.
