Geek Sheets - March 2019 Captain Marvel Special!

by Steve Monnich, GGR co-founder and amateur Silver Surfer

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Geek Sheets!  We are flying Higher, Further, Fatter here at GGR in celebration of the release of Captain Marvel.  While next month is a cornucopia of geek treats to feast upon, the MCU’s second Captain more or less has March all to herself (unless you consider Dinsey’s live action Dumbo as something more than nightmare fuel that’s to be avoided at all costs). While the controversy surrounding the film and the idiocy of various people on the interest has already been well documented, I plan on just reporting the news about this weekend’s highlights and (hopefully) giving you, my cherished readers, something to smile about. See, what I did there was make a joke about the whole “you should smile more” thing immediately after saying I wasn’t going to do any of the troll/virtue signaling topics, but then now I’m pointing it out, so who knows what’s even happening any more! Anyway, let’s find out about the news from this past weekend before Mike “Flerken Wrangler” Lunsford fires me for writing an intro that basically says a lot of nothing!

Captain Marvel Opens Massively at the Box Office

The twenty first film in MCU opened with a pretty darn impressive $153 million domestic gross, achieving the 7th highest first weekend for any film from Marvel Studios.  What’s almost even more staggering, is that it has already surpassed the lifetime domestic gross of The Incredible Hulk, which kind of says more about the Edward Norton flick than Cap Marvs (I promise not to say “Cap Marvs” ever again). While there is still a long way to climb to match Black Panther or any movie with the word “Avengers” in the title, but this is still a nice kick off.  What I think will be interesting to see is just how front loaded the film ends up.  Cappy Mar-Mar had over 4300 theaters, many of which would be IMAX or similarly high priced ticket theaters, not to mention a whirlwind of positive and negative anticipation swirling about pushing people to the cinema, all contributing to a slightly higher than anticipated result.  The question remains is will the word of mouth about what the film actually IS instead of what everyone thought it MIGHT BE keep the cash flowing in.

Brie Larson Surprises Fans

“Would you like the large or the Galactus-sized Popcorn? The Galactus is only $1 more, but it will consume your world once you finish it.”

“Would you like the large or the Galactus-sized Popcorn? The Galactus is only $1 more, but it will consume your world once you finish it.”

Have you ever had that feeling where you see someone in a public place and are like “Why does that person look so familiar? I know somewhere in the recess of my brain this human’s face has appeared before me and I should be able to remember who it belongs to!” And then it suddenly dawns on you, “Oh right, it’s Brie Larson!”.  I think it’s safe to say we have all had that “durr it’s Brie Larson” moment, but none more recently than movie goers in New Jersey.  The patrons of an AMC theater were surprised by having the film’s star there, just serving popcorn like she was studying to play an everyday working Jersey girl for a new Kevin Smith movie. After the critiques and agendas and commentaries and public statements are thru, we have to remember that these actors and actresses are human beings, and it is so refreshing to see an actress using her time to just show up and brighten up random people’s night. Agree or disagree with her positions on things, I don’t really care, because the pictures of her next to little kids who are just beaming because Captain Marvel herself is there to say hi are priceless.

Feige and Marvel Studios Hasn’t Ruled Out Secret Invasion

Kevin-Feige-Captain-Marvel.png

WARNING! MILD SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE TO FOLLOW AFTER THE “AAAIIIIIEEE!!!”.

AAAIIIIIEEE!!!

Whew, ok now that I have scared off all the pansy, spoiler allergic people, we can talk about these Skrulls and how they didn’t become all the various heroes and/or cows like people have theorized.  Talos was just a nice Australian guy looking for a place to settle down and not the mastermind of any kind of sleeper cell of Skrull invaders.  However, when asked if this means that the concept of adapting the 2008 Secret Invasion story line is dead, Kevin Feige basically said ‘au contraire mon frere.’ According to Feige, the MCU’s Skrulls are just as diverse as any other races, with good and bad, heroes and villains, so a secret invasion from another sect of Skrulls may find its way onto the big screen.

And that about sums it all up. Another stellar opening for the comic book movie world and another round to chamber into the pop culture machine gun we like to call GGR.  When it comes to nerdy topics or anything you can get geeky about, and you want to speculate on the future, relive the past, create alternate version of exiting material or whatever other creative thing you can do with these hobbies, join us in the refuge.  We have a cavalcade of articles and podcast, and something will surely lineup with your particular brand of fanatical interests.  Until next time refugees, I’m Steve Monnich and don’t be a juicebag.
