Geek Sheets - February 2019

Welcome to this month’s edition of the Geek Sheets! Writing an article on President’s day today, however I am more inspired by another holiday in the month of February.  The one that inspired one of the top 3 Bill Murray movies of all time, Groundhog Day. While objectively, Groundhog Day is a ridiculous holiday, it is also a fun exercise in rampant, unfounded speculation on the future.  Since there isn’t a piping hot television or movie slate currently out, that gives us the wonderful opportunity to act like Punxsutawney Phil and prognosticate on some upcoming Geek topics.

Netflix Cancels The Punisher and Jessica Jones

Well, this is something I think everyone saw coming.  So far this part of the article isn’t matching up the premise I set at the beginning.  I’m thinking I should retire from Geek Sheeting (calls Mike “the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regent of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons” Lunsford), but I was recently informed due to unfunny Game of Thrones references I would be required to continue with the articles.  No the part here that is up for some speculation is will we ever see these iterations of the Defenders characters again? Hulu has expressed interest in potentially continuing the 5 different series from where they left off. Jeph Loeb also made a public statement assuring that while it may not be with Netflix, the stories of Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist will find a new home somewhere. After the quality of Daredevil season 3, I certainly hope we see more from these properties.

Black Adam Reportedly Will Not Be In Post-Credit Scene of SHAZAM

DC’s next film apparently will not include the protagonist’s most prolific and iconic nemesis.  Not long after Man of Steel debuted kicking off the DCEU, it was announced that Dwyane Johnson would be portraying Shazam’s foe Black Adam.  Geekdom unanimously was like “yeah I could totally see that!” and then nothing ever happened. Some rumors floated around Black Adam would be involved in the semi-rebooted semi-sequel Suicide Squad film, but that’s it.  Now we are hearing that the Shazam movie will not reference or show Black Adam, not even in a post-credit clip.  There doesn’t even appear to be a script completed for the film as of yet, so I suppose it makes a degree of sense that teasing a character people won’t see for about three-ish years makes sense.  It’s not like Marvel ever teased a character that was the lead villain six years later and was one of the highest grossing movies of all time or anything.

Lightsaber Dueling Officially Recognized as a Sport

France’s official body governing the sport of fencing has added lightsaber dueling as a new legal category.  Human beings on Earth today can now have sanctioned laser sword battles, that other human beings will referee and judge and will say “you are the winner and this other dude is the loser of this fight”.  The key purpose cited by the French was to get lazy nerds to do something more active that is still very dorky. Essentially in their view, people are getting too fat because they sit around and watch Star Wars all day, so we will be using their own love to trick them into accidentally reducing their chance of heart disease and diabetes.  The question is will this catch on? With the polycarbonate style sabers, you can really get going without damaging the weapon or your opponent too bad, and there are established rules and scoring. It is possible we could see in the 2032 Olympics, various NBC analysts commenting on saber color choice?

So what will it be? A Black Adam movie or six more weeks of winter? An early spring or Hulu’s version of Iron Fist?  Wait I think I got some wires crossed here. Whatever, you know what I’m talking about. Until next time refugees, I’m Steve Monnich and don’t be a juicebag!
