Geek Sheets 8/14/2018
by Steve Monnich, content editor
Welcome one and all to this week’s edition of the Geek Sheets! I am so glad all you geekonauts have returned for the second round of geeky news. Also, I immediately regret calling you all geekonauts, and will work day and night to come up with a far better nickname to use in future editions. While I work on that, why don’t you just take a quick second to subscribe to our podcast, GGR Pirate Radio and then move on to the next couple of paragraphs to dive into some nerd news stories.
Preliminary details surface about Jon Favreau’s Star Wars live action series
In addition to the main movie series, the Star Wars universe is also expanding into live action television for the first time since the 2 Ewok specials in the mid-80s (a dark, dark time indeed). The guy who played Monica’s boyfriend Pete in Friends is directing a new series that is purportedly set to take place seven years after the events of Return of the Jedi. I have read some rumors that the premise is the set around the Mandalorians and the reestablishment of their culture, however take that scuttlebutt for what it’s worth. And if you are wondering what this series is worth, that would be a big fat $100 million dollars. Happy Hogan will have stacks and stacks to play with to make sure we don’t have another…gasp…Star Wars Holiday Special.
Sadly, we have already reached the 4-year mark of Robin Williams’s passing
O Captain, My Captain. In what has seemed like a never-ending stretch of celebrity deaths, none has had more impact on the GGR crew than Robin Williams (although Carrie Fisher and Leonard Nimoy are right there as well). He was hilarious, iconic, memorable and the true essence of an entertainer. It is almost hard to fathom that it has been 4 years since his passing, but what we do have is the voluminous body of work to remember his legacy. Mork and Mindy, Mrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, Hook, Aladdin, on and on and on the list goes. For a far more touching and substantial look at Mr. William’s life and passing, check out this article by our own Mike Lunsford.
The name’s Elba, Idris Elba
The James Bond franchise has recently had its ups and downs and no one was sure if we would make it to Bond 25 with Daniel Craig as the leading man. Of course, we know that Bond 25 is on its way, but much speculation is now centered towards who will be the seventh 007. One very popular name being bandied about is that of Idris Elba. Elba himself fanned the flames of these rumors with a tweet stating “my name’s Elba, Idris Elba” which instantly sent Bond fans into a tizzy. Recently Elba has denied any talks about playing the British super-spy legend and even tweeted “Don’t believe the HYPE…” but this wouldn’t be the first time heavy fan petitioning has made a studio consider the impact of a particular casting choice. Only time will tell who walks in that spotlight and draws the famed Walther PPK in Bond 26.
Oh where does the time go?! I can’t believe we are at the end of yet another Sheet O’ the Geeks, but here we are. If you feel as crestfallen as I do about the article being over, might I recommend subscribing to the GGR Pirate Radio podcast or clicking on one of the many humorous articles on the site. Those will tide you over until I can hook you up with more of the pure, uncut, 100% Colombian dork news. If you do check out our other stuff, I alsos promise not to call you Geekonauts again, I swear! Until next time Refugees, I’m Steve Monnich and don’t be a juicebag.
