Welcome one and all to this week’s edition of the Geek Sheets! It’s time to kick the week off on the right foot by getting your update on the most recent pop culture news stories. Think of it like a fresh, hot cup of coffee to get your morning going, but instead of a delicious caffeinated beverage it’s a funny article.  If this isn’t enough to get the caffeine monkey off your back, I would suggest ordering a high-octane espresso version of our content by subscribing to the GGR Pirate Radio podcast.  It’s just the best!  Ok, onto the news stories that you have been salivating for.

James Bond director Danny Boyle steps down

Recently, citing creative differences, director Danny Boyle announced that he has stepped down and will no longer direct the 25th film in the James Bond franchise.  Production was set to start at the end of the year, however with this news also comes the unavoidable delays.  A few days ago, a somewhat unsubstantiated short list of replacement directors has been circulating, including notable names such as David Mackenzie, Yann Demange and most interestingly Edgar Wright.  Wright has on numerous occasions voiced his desire to play within the James Bond universe.  No word yet on if Idris Elba has been tapped to director this film before becoming the next James Bond in Bond 26.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 has been delayed indefinitely

Somewhat unsurprisingly, Disney has elected to hit the pause button on this whole GOTG Vol 3 snafu in which they have found themselves. With James Gunn being bounced, the entirety of the cast backing the idea of re-hiring him, Dave Bautista threating to skip out on the film and no new director being poised to take on the writer/director duties of the franchise, I can’t blame Disney for saying, “Hey let’s all just take a breath here”.  The film was originally slated to drop in May of 2020, and while not officially cancelled, no indication has been given on when we can expected to see what songs Peter Quill has loaded up into his shiny, new Zune.

Dominic Monaghan reunited with JJ Abrams, cast in Star Wars Ep IX

After Christopher Lee set the precedent, a second Lord of the Rings actor has made the leap into Hyperspace (unless you want to count Anthony Daniels doing the voice work for Legolas in the 1978 animated version of LOTR, which I don’t want to and you can’t make me!).  Either Merry or Pippin’s actor (no one in history can tell them apart or remember who is who) has been cast in an unspecified role in the upcoming Star Wars film set for release December 2019.  Monaghan worked with Abrams on the hit show Lost and now the two will team up again.  No word yet on how many smoke monsters and unresolved/unfulfilling plot lines will also make an appearance in the film.

YAAAAWWWNNN…Oh man I really need to get some java up in these veins! I guess these snippets were just not quite enough newsy cappuccino to get me moving, and if that’s true for you too, please check out some of our other articles and podcasts. They will be just what the dork barista ordered to get your geek juices flowing all week long.  Until next time Refugees, I’m Steve Monnich and don’t be a juicebag.

Matt Smith Cast for a "major role" in Star Wars Ep IX

The 11th Doctor himself, Matt Smith has been added to the growing cast of Star Wars Episode IX: Attack of the Working Title. It is not clear who he will be playing, just as Merry is not clear on his role in the new space opera (HE WAS MERRY STEVE! HOBBITS ARE WONDERFUL CREATURES AND DESERVE YOUR RESPECT!). However, as per internet reports, the Doctor Who alum has been stated to be playing a major role. No reports on whether fans would be angry or excited if the TARDIS showed up in a galaxy far, far away.
