Geek Sheets - Third Week of October
by “Superfly” Steve Monnich-Snuka
Welcome one and all to this week’s edition of the Geek Sheets! I tried guys. I tried really hard to get this article into some semblance of a theme like I usually try to do. I have done articles all about characters, things you watch, and even one all about Disney owned properties. But this week I just couldn’t find the through-line, the thread, the “it’s there if you squint” theme of the 3 independent news stories for last week’s dorky topics. And for a peek behind the curtain, it was close, as I was two thirds of the way there with a “costumes” theme, but then Iron Fist had to show up in the news again and ruin it! For a show that almost everyone considers the worst of the Netflix shows, I feel like we talk about it more than the other three combined, but maybe that is just me. Maybe when we discuss these topics on the next episode of GGR Pirate Radio (subscribe, rate, review please!), I can get the likes of James Rambo, MC Brooks or Macho Man Mike Lunsford-Savage to help squeeze a unified theory out of these topics. Maybe you could help!? Just keep reading and see what you think!
Netflix Cancels Iron Fist After Its Second Season
Netflix has decided to forgo any future seasons of the Marvel series Iron Fist despite a huge jump in the ratings for its second season. While this is not the first original content on its network that has been cancelled (there have actually been over 20), this is one of the only ones that was cancelled without a scandal attached or a dip in ratings. A few theories abound, such as the streaming giant getting ready to give up the whole Marvel slate when Disney starts their own service or perhaps this is all a set up to include Danny Rand in a “Heroes for Hire” show. I think the bottom line is that because Netflix only makes money on its original content by capturing and maintaining subscriptions, a show that is “fine” isn’t really good enough. There isn’t a huge contingent of fans across the globe who are exclusively buying a Netflix subscription based on a third season of Iron Fist, and that is the reason that most closely adheres to Occam’s Razor.
The Arrow-verse Unveils The Elseworlds Superman
Each year we have been fortunate enough to have the minds behind Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow craft multi-show, multi-episode crossover events. This year it looks like we will have an event called Elseworlds, which derives its name a line of DC comic books that tell alternate histories about all your favorite characters. A photo was recently published on Steven Amell’s twitter feed showing Supergirl’s Tyler Hoechlin donning the infamous black Superman suit. It would seem apparent that with a title like Elseworlds this isn’t the same old Superman we have seen and will be some dark, alternate, possibly evil Superman. That is definitely the type of threat that could bring all the heroes together for yet another crossover.
Spider-man’s Got a New Suit Too!
On to part two of heroes who wear red and blue costumes but now there is a picture of them wearing a black costume. A series of videos and photos have cropped up on the internet showing set photos from the new Spider-man: Far From Home film. The scene shows Spider-man swinging with MJ (Zendaya) off a city sidewalk, which is interesting enough to have MJ and Spidey interacting one on one, however the real interesting part is the uniform the webslinger is wearing. It looks quite similar to the prior costume seen in Spider-man: Homecoming, but everywhere that we once saw blue is now a dark black. Coupling this picture with a prior set photo of an all-black Spider-man on a Ferris wheel, some people have jumped right to symbiote. That does seem rather unlikely since a Venom film JUST came out, and the rights to all things in the Spider-verse still belong to Sony, they would not cannibalize their own future value by allowing the MCU to have a version of the symbiote. It seems far more likely this will again be a piece of Stark tech, or a suit Peter and Ned have modified that will mimic the Big Time costume Parker was running around in for some time in the comics. For the uninitiated, the Big Time suit was one that was adaptable with a few modes such as anti-sound or complete stealth. It’s the kind of thing one would need to battle the likes of Mysterio (my favorite Spider-Villain of all time).
Well, did you get anything? Yeah me neither…unless you want to count the theme of “minor things only super nerds care about”, but really that is almost everything we do here at GGR anyway. Perhaps when historians dig thru the recesses of the internet after the 5th intergalactic war, they will find this article and will say “wow, 1300 years ago some scholar wrote a thoughtful piece about the popular culture of the day, and see how it all ties together like ____”. If only I was the brave Star Warrior who knew the answer to how all this ties together, but for now I will just hope that it was an entertaining read for all three snippets and that you enjoy our further conversation on these topics during this week’s GGR Pirate Radio. Until next time, I’m Steve Monnich (Star Warrior in training) and don’t be a juicebag!
Part 2 of the “Return of the Geek Sheets” has Mike, MC and Rambo discussing the details of the tragedy on the set of “Rust” and Dave Chappelle’s most recent Netflix special and it’s very clear message.
