Geek Sheets - Third Week of September
by Steve “Big Gulps, huh? Well…see ya later!” Monnich, GGR Co-founder
Welcome one and all to this week’s edition of the Geek Sheets! This week’s list of hot topics is all about people playing characters. We all love to get into the lore of movie universes, speculate wildly on future events that could happen in the next sequel or argue about what source material should be adapted next, yet we often forget to look at some of the simplest things. Things like, the characters. The news this week is looking at that very topic, and then we can dive deeper into each one on GGR Pirate Radio, our podcast that looks at the full spectrum of nerdy topics and discusses them well past the level to which full grown adults should. If that sounds like your level of fandom, please consider subscribing, as we would love to have you! Now onto the news.
Rainn Wilson’s name is Mudd
This story was absolutely included for Vice Admiral, Time Lord and Vampire Hunter Mike Lunsford as he is a massive Star Trek fan. Wilson revived the classic character of Harry Mudd on season 1 of Star Trek: Discovery, and it appears he will be involved in the franchise a bit more. It was known that he will be reprising the role in the upcoming second season, however Wilson dropped a tweet recently that teased at possibly more for the nefarious character. Many are speculating that Mudd will have his own episode of the upcoming Star Trek: Short Treks, a new anthology style series taking a snapshot of various characters in the Trek Universe. Time will tell what the story is, unless we get stuck in another Time Loop and then who knows. So, time will tell what the story is, unless of course we get stuck in another Time Loop and then who knows. So, I think time will tell what the story is, unless of course…wait, is anyone else having déjà vu? Damn it Mudd!!
First look at Joaquin Phoenix as…some guy?
The first photos of the Todd Philips helmed Joker movies have surfaced, and boy does Phoenix look menacing as the Joker! And by menacing I mean like Lloyd Christmas’s creepy uncle who isn’t allowed near the schools and playgrounds. But according to initial statements, that’s the essence the film is developing, as it takes place in the early 80s, pre-white faced Joker, pre-Batman, pre-Harley Quinn. It’s designed to be more psychological, planting the seeds for the lunatic that is already there and how the transformation into the Joker just brings the inner side out for the world to see. It is also important to note that the film has no connection to the larger DCEU as it currently stands, so based on this it can go anywhere it wants to, and coupling that with the Joker’s history, it could end up pretty dark. I don’t expect to see, for example, a harbor full of fish with a rictus grin.
KORG?!?!?!
Tony Stark, no Cap, no no no Rocket!! People will debate constantly about who their favorite MCU character is, but undoubtedly one of the most universally popular is the rock man simply known as Korg. Debuting in Thor: Ragnarok and portrayed by the film’s director Taika Waititi, Korg has been the inspiration for thousands, it not millions of references and memes. And it seems there is a chance the revolution starter could be popping up in Avengers 4. In a photo posted online, the cast and crew of some of the reshoots were huddled together at a restaurant opening. Mixed in among the usual suspects was Taika Waititi himself, and this being the interest, people went insane speculating on Korg’s triumphant return. No word yet on if he will or will not be Darryl’s next roommate, as the necessary calculations have not been completed as whether the world contains enough servers and mainframes to withstand the internet’s simultaneous euphoria.
So here ends another week of the Geek Sheets: Character edition. It is always fun to be dorky in the realm of fictional characters, but if real life characters are more your speed, has Sorcerer Supreme Mike Lunsford got the podcast for you. Stop Me If You’ve Heard This will look at a few behind the scenes tales of various people, places and things that are almost too hard to believe. The debut show retold the fascinating history of Weezer’s album Pinkerton, and soon we will all be blessed with the legend that is The Offspring’s Dexter Holland. If you want characters, there ya go! Until next time Refugees, I’m Steve Monnich and don’t be a juicebag.
